What Do the people of Victoria think about panhandling?
” I think it would be a good idea for the city to get involved to make an ordi n ance to keep people off the corner.” Said Michael Morehead
Michael Keaton Morehead has been panhandling on the streets of Victoria now for four years and we spoke with him today about what he does day in and day out to survive on the streets. While Morehead admits panhandling is a problem in the city he says some panhandlers are giving it a bad wrap.
“I ‘m not going to lie to everybody I ‘m on the streets everyday and there are pretty much on the N orthside they are scamming out there on the N orthside I’m going to say that.” Said Morehead
While Keaton admits there are some panhandlers who are scamming there are some that truly need the help like himself. He says he has tried to find steady work but says being homeless just creates a bigger problem. City Council is again discussing the issue on the possibility of regulating it and what’ the city liability would be if they enacted an ordinance. So today we spoke with some people about panhandling.
” W ell I can understand it to a certain point but like I said they a really need to get a job ins tead of standing on the corner.” Said Georgie Bass
We spoke with another resident who did not want to go on camera but says panhandling is not just a Victoria problem but says a Victoria community solution is possible.”
“there were some organizations like maybe the city if they have a truck and would pick them up and say hey look we need some help at R iverside P ark or at De L eon P laza.”
And Resident Georgie Bass says if you can’t beat them join them.
” I’VE BEEN TEMPTED TO GET OUT THERE MYSELF BUT THEY TRY AND TELL ME THEY MAKE ALL THIS MONEY.” Said Bass
