Wharton County proposed tax raise could provide needed assistance to volunteer fire department

The Wharton County Volunteer Fire Department is hoping a proposed tax raise can provide the department with some much needed financial relief.

The proposed tax raise would amount to a five cent increase for Wharton County residents. This comes months after discussions to raise the rate from its current three cents. This increase would go towards maintaining equipment and other department needs. Residents can voice their opinions during two upcoming public hearings. However, the final decision will rest on Emergency Services District Number One’s board of directors, barring a rollback election. The date of the public hearings are yet to be determined.
