West Wins, East Falls as District Volleyball Play Begins

West volleyball opened district play on Tuesday evening against Carroll and did so victoriously, beating the Tigers in four sets. The Warriors took the first two sets by scores of 25-15 and 25-21 respectively, before dropping a tight third frame 25-22. They would bounce back to win the fourth 25-20 to take the match and a 1-0 district record into their weekend tournament in San Marcos.

Erin Reynolds led all Warriors with 16 kills, with sophomore Rachel Goodwine adding 12 of her own. Lexi Morris’ 39 digs led the team while Piper Kallman added 24 assists and Kia Wilborn added 23. West begins play in the San Marcos tournament on Thursday.

East, meanwhile, also played it’s first district match of 2018 on Tuesday evening, falling on the road to Calhoun in four sets to drop their record on the season to 9-7. After dropping the first set 25-14, the Titans came back to take the second by a score of 25-21 before losing the final two, 25-19 and 25-23 respectively. It marked the first match for East since playing in the Jaguar tournament in Floresville this past week. They won 5 of 6 matches at that tournament to finish second overall.

Leilani Wimbish-Gay led all Titans with 12 kills and added 21 digs in the losing effort, while Lauren Vahalik added 2 aces, 3 kills and 11 digs. Abby Barnett had 4 kills and 15 digs and Loren Escalona let all Titans with 18 assists. East will open up another tournament themselves this coming weekend, as they travel to Goliad to play in the Goliad Tournament from Thursday to Saturday. St. Joseph’s volleyball will also be participating in that tournament.
