West softball prepares for second round of playoffs

Lady Warriors play first game of series on Friday

VICOTRIA,TX- The Victoria West Lady Warriors are heading to the second round of playoffs to play against Sharyland Pioneer.

The West Lady Warriors are coming off a 11-1 win over Mission Veterans Memorial. The Lady Warriors are heading back to San Diego where they played their bi-district game. In the previous round, the Lady Warriors only played a win or go home game, but this time it will be a best of three series. Lady Warriors head coach Jody Thompson said they need to stay focused and continue to work hard and push through if they want to be successful.

“You can’t buy experience,” said Thompson. “I’m glad that we were here last year so that the girls know what to expect. It’s nothing new to them, it’s now or never, do or die situation.”

Some of the keys to success that Thompson has for the team is to put the ball in play and play solid defense. Senior centerfielder Sydney Harvey is one of the leaders, as she is the lead off hitter and wants to lead by example and to be the biggest cheerleader for her team.

“We are really comfortable with each other, we are ready to play, ready to compete,” said Harvey. We have to have the same mentality as last year, go hard and don’t underestimate our competition and play our hardest all the way through.”

Also expected to have a big impact on the series is junior pitcher, Alexis James. She not only can change the game in the circle but also in the batters box. She was a sophomore last year during the historic run for the Lady Warriors and knows what she needs to do to be successful.

“We are going to go through practice like we normally do,” said James. “Do the things we need to do, go through the routine and pitch and hit and do all of that.”

The team will play game one Friday, May 7 at 6:00 p.m. in San Diego, then will play game two Saturday at 11:00 a.m. and if need be, play game three soon after.
