West powerlifter signs with college

Noah Martinez signs with Midland University in Nebraska

VICTORIA, Texas — West powerlifting state qualifier Noah Martinez will compete at the next level.

Martinez, who was a favorite to win gold in the 165-pound weight class of this year’s state powerlifting meet, signed with Midland University in Nebraska on Wednesday. In his senior season — cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic — Martinez was ranked number two in the state in his weight class, and 130 pounds ahead of the next closest competitor is his weight class.

“I’ve worked so hard for this moment,” said Martinez on Tuesday. “Ever since I made it to state in my junior year I worked my butt off. To see it pay off and to earn a scholarship really means the world to me.”

Martinez set a regional record earlier this year with a 640-pound deadlift at the West meet.
