West hosts powerlifting Bar Bender’s Bash

Hundreds of area powerlifters were at West High School on Saturday competing in the Victoria West Bar Bender’s Bash.

The Warriors not only hosted the meet, but also won it. The West boys took home first overall with 43 points. Four Warrior boys won first in their individual weight classes: Benny Lara (114 lb.), Ken’twaun Freeman (181 lb.), Jason Suniga (275 lb.) and Drew Hathaway (SHW).

Behind the West boys was Calhoun in second place. Eddie Garcia (220 lb.), Leo Colom (242 lb.), Moc Moo (132 lb.) and Daniel Leita (165 lb.) all took home first in their weight divisions.

The East boys came in fourth place. It was a big day for Jonathan Zelaya. Not only did he win first in the 148 lb. weight class, he also won Best Male Lifter of the meet.

For the girls, the defending state-champion Calhoun girls took home first place with 59 points. Six Sandies won first in their weight class: Rhema Orta (97 lb.), McKayla Cortez (105 lb.), Danielle Bacon (114 lb.), Skyleigh Sears (123 lb.), Genisis Villarreal (132 lb.) and Hailey Nichols (148 lb.).

The Warrior girls came in fourth place. Kaylynn Lawson won the 259+ lb. weight division. The St. Joseph girls took home seventh place. Kaylie Perez took first in the 220 lb. division. The Edna girls finished in 11th place while the Titan girls tied for 12th place with Goliad.
