West-East Girls Basketball Preview

Stakes High For Rematch

For a fourth straight week, St. Joe boys basketball is near the top of the state poll.
The Flyers, at number two in the Texas Association Of Basketball Coaches state TAPPS 5A poll behind Cedar Hill Trinity Christian. The St. Joe boys picked up another district road win Saturday to improve to 27-1 on the season, 6-0 in district. They continue district play at the St. Joe Dome Tuesday night against Corpus John Paul. Girls game first at 6:15. Also in the TABC poll, the Industrial girls are 25th in 3A, El Campo girls 15th and the Cuero girls 25th in the 4A rankings.

Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial, 13th in the TABC state 5A girls poll. They are still tied with West for the district lead at 13-2 with one game to go. The Warrior girls host the Titans girls after winning at East last month. I talked with two West girls about how big it would be to sweep East and clinch at least a district co-championship.

Said point Taizhae Grant, “It’s very exciting due to all the hard work that we’ve put in and things we’ve overcome to get our spot in being tied for first and how hard we’ve worked for it.”

Said wing Ashley Giesalhart, “It feels actually because we’re real close. For us to beat them is just really cool. We always want to beat East.”

East girls basketball clinched a playoff spot last Friday night with a home win over King. The Titan girls are 11-4 and would really like to avoid a second straight season sweep at the hands of the West girls. Our Sean Coffey talked with two Titan girls about what they can do to turn it around in their second matchup.

Said guard Susie Hernandez, “Overall, we need to come out a lot harder defense-wise. Then I think rebounding and boxing out is gonna be key for us.”

Said post/wing Leilani Wimbish-Gay, “Executing and rebounding, boxing out was the main part of our game that we lost last time. So I think if we learn how to execute better and box out, we’ll probably do way better than we did last time.”

After the West vs. East girls basketball game, the East boys go for the season sweep of the Warrior boys at West Tuesday night.
