West boys prepare for powerlifting state championship

Warriors Erick Orta and Seth Neibrandt are heading to the powerlifting state championship meet

VICTORIA, Texas — The boys powerlifting meet is March 26 in Abilene. Victoria West Warriors senior Erik Orta is excited for this huge event.

This is the first time Orta is heading to state and has worked hard for this opportunity. The senior is competing in the 114 weight class and has a goal to break all his personal records while at the state meet.

“Every morning I wake up at 4:30 a.m. said Orta. I eat a good breakfast and come workout in the morning at school, then I go to baseball practice after school then I lift again. So I’m lifting twice a day.”

Orta, who is also on the baseball team, said playing baseball helps his core and keeps him in shape. Right now his personal records are 350 lbs in squat, 200 lbs in bench and 360 lbs in deadlift. Other goals Orta has is to hit the 365 lbs mark in squat, make the podium in state and bring home a medal.

West junior Seth Neibrandt,  also qualified for the state meet an will compete in the 198 weight class. During regionals, Neibrandt finished in second place and has high hopes for the state meet. He wants to have personal records in all three lifts and have a total lifted weight of 1,600 lbs. Currently, Neibrandt lifts 585 lbs in squat, 358 lbs in bench and 600 lbs in deadlift. He attributes his success to a couple of things.

“I really started focusing on my diet and I got a gym membership because I got a license so I was able to consistently go, said Neibrandt”

Neibrandt wants to focus on recovery time and taking time off when needed. This will be his first time these boys will be heading to the state meet which takes place Saturday in Abilene at 8 a.m.
