West boys beat East in PK shootout, East girls win over West
East and West boys and girls soccer faced off in a VISD soccer showdown at Memorial Stadium on Friday. The East girls grabbed a 2-1 win over West. Then the Warrior boys beat the Titans 5-4 in a penalty kick shootout.
The West girls took an early lead in the first half when Madeline Gabbert scored off an assist from Vivian Gonzalez to go up 1-0. However, one minute later, Olivia Salas scored for the Titans to tie it up. Salas scored another goal in the second half to give East the lead and the Titans would win 2-1. Goalie Drew Garcia had 13 saves for the Titans. For West, Carmen Elizondo had eight saves in the goal. The East girls remain undefeated in district while the Warriors drop to 2-1-1.
In the boys matchup, our Athlete of the Week Abraham Salazar scored the first goal of the game for the Titans to give East a 1-0 lead. In the second half, Luis Rivas-Rodriguez scored the game-tying goal for the Warriors. At the end of regulation, East and West were tied 1-1 to send it to penalty kicks. The Warriors won the shootout 5-4 with Gerardo Canales scoring the game-winning penalty kick. The game will be recorded as a tie in the standings, but West will receive two points for the win, while East will receive one point. The Warriors are now 0-3-1 in district and the Titans are 1-1-1.
On Tuesday night, East soccer will play at Foster, while West soccer will host Angleton at Memorial Stadium.
