Coast Guard giving Mexican fisherman safe harbor ahead of Tropical Storm Fernand

BROWNSVILLE, Texas - The Coast Guard, Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Brownsville Police Department, and the Port of Brownsville's Harbor Master Office are working together to provide  safe harbor for approximately 30 fishing vessels in the Port of Brownsville ahead of Tropical Storm Fernand.

"This multi-agency effort is to primarily provide a safe harbor for these vessels to wait out the storm," said Lieutenant Kurtis Mees, commanding officer, Coast Guard Station South Padre Island. "Through our positive working relationships with our partnering agencies, we are able to quickly mobilize to provide for the safety of these mariners at sea as well as our local communities and the port."

The Coast Guard is anticipating more requests from Mexican vessels for safe harbor in the coming days.
