Warriors prepare for bi-district round of playoffs

VICTORIA, Texas — The Victoria West Warriors are looking to pick up where they left off last year as its season was cut short in a heart breaking loss to Glenn. This year the Warriors finished third in their district with a record of 21-12. West is playing the La Joya Palmview Lobos who are 17-17 on the year. The Warriors are coming off a win over crosstown rivals the East Titans in the last game of the regular season. Senior forward Jadyn Smith was a part of the team last year as a junior and has since become the leader on the team. He says the thing they are focusing on in practice is defense.

I am looking forward to playing and having fun. There is great excitement and I am wanting my team to play good.

The Warriors first year head coach Cody McDonald was a part of the historic run last year when Victoria West made it to the regional semifinals. This year he said it is great to have a player like Smith step up and be a leader on the team after a great group of seniors left last year. The team has learned and benefited from last year since they now know what it is like to practice for playoffs, travel routine and McDonald said they are really prepared.

I’m excited for the opportunity. It’s a great group of guys, trying to carry the tradition of previous years, said McDonald. I am looking forward to these guys stepping up and making a run.
