Warriors Cody McDonald steps up role as head coach

West Warriors introduce Cody McDonald as the new head coach

VICTORIA, Texas– The West Warriors basketball team will have a new head coach for the 2021-22 season after coach Pat Erskine resigned from his position to become the assistant coach at Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial.

Taking over as the new head coach is former West assistant, Cody McDonald.

Coach Erskine gave McDonald his first opportunity to coach several years ago.

McDonald said Erskine leaving is bittersweet because this opportunity was his dream job, but on the other hand Erskine taught him how to be a role model for young men.

“What we want to do is build on last season. There are big shoes to step into and to fill. We have a team that wants to do that and wants to put in the work to continue a tradition that last years senior class helped reinvigorate. We are just excited and ready to go to work,” said McDonald.

McDonald mentioned that senior Jaden Smith will be one of the leaders on the team heading into the next season.

Smith said it’s nice to have a familiar face coming back as head coach. Smith along with some former and returning players were practice on their own during open gym.

Smith looks to become a role model for the underclassman this upcoming season.

“Just keep the work ethic, hooping getting better, hopefully winning district again and keep working hard,” said Smith.

The West Warriors had an overall record of 19-5 last year and were the district champions with a district record of 14 -2.

The Warriors reached the regional semifinals for the first time in Victoria west school history. Although the team will look different, all the players and coaches still have that family mentality.
