Warming center making preparations to help those in need
As very cold air heads our way, churches and homeless advocates are preparing to make sure everyone has a warm place to stay
VICTORIA, Texas – We visited with Kim Pickens, homeless advocate and humility project manager. Pickens says that they are preparing the multi purpose room at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, to house those that are looking to escape from the bitter cold.
Pickens says that Our Saviors Lutheran will open their doors Thursday at five in the evening, and remain open as long as the cold temperatures remain. Pickens says that those that stop in can expect not only a warm place and a hot meal, but also an opportunity to get further help.
“We have cots that we will put out, over half of the multi-purpose room area. And then we will have tables for people to eat or sit and play cards, or to talk with other community health workers about things that they might need, like identification documents, things like that,” said Pickens.
Pickens says that donations of blankets, jackets, as well as monetary donations are always welcomed. Volunteers also are needed, mainly just to make sure everyone is warm, safe, and fed.
Our Saviors Lutheran church is located on the corner on crest wood and Ben Jordan streets in Victoria.
