VISD to introduce a new elementary after-school program for the 2020-2021 school year
Right at School is a program that will be replacing the YMCA after-school program that has been in VISD for 28 years
VICTORIA, Texas- After 28 years of having the YMCA operate the Victoria school district’s elementary after-school program, district administrators have decided to go in a different direction with a program called Right at School.
From themes of community, culture to career exploration, Right at School will soon be coming to an elementary near you.
“It’s not just academics, there’s a lot of social emotional learning activities, team work that go into the curriculum units,” said Shawna Currie, VISD Communications Direction. “So it’s really a way to help them learn even more than they are learning in the classroom but they’re having fun doing it.”
Currie adds that Right at School is not only comparable cost-wise to the YMCA program, it’ll also bring more jobs.
“When they bring the program into the school district, all of their employees, all of the hiring, all of that is going to be local. Whether it’s from campus, the neighborhood, it’s adding additional jobs in our community. Right at School is known for really becoming part of the communities of the school districts that they work with. They give back through volunteer hours, they give back through financial assistance and scholarships and they really try to better the communities they go into.”
An information meeting is scheduled for 6:30 pm Wednesday, January 15 at the Dr. Robert Jaklich Conference Center, located at 1110 Sam Houston Dr, Victoria, TX 77901.
“Again, I can’t stress [enough] why we want parents to come out,” Currie said. “To learn about Right at School, to learn more about the company and what they have to offer.”
