VISD qualifies seven powerlifters for THSPA state meet
At the THSPA Boys Regional Meet on Saturday, seven Victoria powerlifters qualified for the state meet. The Region 5, Division 1 meet took place at Weslaco East High School.
East had two Titans advance to state. Jonathan Zelaya not only won first place in the 148 lb. division, but also set a new Region 5 squat record for his weight class, lifting 605 lb. Zelaya also had a personal-best deadlift of 505 lb. Also going to state for East is Christian Oviedo at 220 lb. He placed 6th but met the state qualifying total with personal best lifts in squat and deadlift. The Titans placed 9th as a team.
West took home 8th in the team standings and qualified all five lifters that competed at regionals. In the 114-lb. weight class, Michael Casillas brought home a third place medal, lifting a total 980 lb. Benny Lara placed 9th in the same division. At 181 lb., Chayce Grevey took third place after lifting a total 1,430 lb. Also at 181 lb., Ken’twaun Freeman placed 7th. In the 275 lb. class, Jason Suniga finished in 4th place after lifting a total 1,610 lb. All five Warriors met the state qualifying totals to advance to the state meet in Abilene in two weeks.
