VISD Baseball Tourney Preview
Titans, Warriors, Flyers Start Play Thursday
Local baseball teams are ready for the VISD tournament.
West baseball goes into the VISD tourney with a 1-1 district record. The Warriors are 6-5 overall after going 2-2 at the Floresville tournament last weekend. Head coach Manuel Alvarado told me the biggest things he wants to see from his team at the VISD tournament.
“I’d like to see clutch hitting. That’s something we’re lacking right now with men in scoring position. I’d also like to see our pitching staff do better eliminating leadoff walks and two-out walks. That’s been hurting us lately. Those are things we need to improve on this weekend. ”
In the district lead with a 3-0 record, East baseball now takes a short break from district action. The Titans, now 6-7 overall after blasting Miller, 11-0, in four and a half innings. Jacob Martinez tosses a one-hitter with 14 strikeouts. Before that, East went 1-4 at the Comal tournament last weekend. Head coach Wes Kolle told me his team’s goals for the VISD tournament.
“We love playing at Riverside. We’re blessed with a beautiful ballpark and our crowd definitely comes out and supports us. We’re looking forward to that. We’ve talked about putting out a good product on the field. It’s just playing Titan baseball, not trying to do anything special or extraordinary, just get in synch with the game. ”
St. Joe baseball heads into the VISD tournament 7-0 under new head coach Corti Wilson. The former UHV Jaguar player led the Flyers to the Sacred Heart tournament championship. Coach Wilson told me the biggest things he wants to see from St. Joe at the VISD tourney.
“I want to see us compete. This probably is our biggest test. We know that going into the tournament. I want to see us compete very well at a higher level than what we have been. ”
St. Joe will be the first local baseball team to starts play in the 51st VISD tournament.
The Flyers play Thursday morning at 9:00 at Lowe Field against Yoakum.
Then West starts play in the tourney against St. Joe at 11:30 at Riverside Stadium.
That’s followed by East baseball’s first game in the tourney Thursday afternoon at 2:00 against Sinton.
