Victorians react to Boulevard playground fire

The Victoria Fire Department is investigating a playground fire on Rose Drive. The area now closed to the public has neighbors upset, and this is not the first time this has happened.

The park is in the center of an inner city community, and neighbors say this park is needed. But now, to replace it the city would pay a high price tag.

Spring has arrived, and a day at the park would excite anyone, however, Boulevard Park won’t be an option as a pile of melted plastic is all that is left.

” This playground is used by this neighborhood, and it’s just sad for that more than anything, ” said Parks and Recreation Director Colby VanGundy .

Victoria Fire Department has identified two juveniles who were involved in the start of the fire, however, no other details of the investigation are available. Parks and Recreation added this playground would cost the city more than $86,000 to replace.

” That would be something that we would take to council, that’s not something that I will decide. We will take it to council on whether we rebuild or not, ” said VanGundy .

Boulevard park is no stranger to fire. Neighbors say less than 3 years ago, this same playground was set ablaze. Luckily, it was replaced, but now they are concerned that won’t be the case this time around.

” The kids don’t deserve that, they deserve a pace here, ” Park Neighbor Mr. G said. ” I’ve e seen them come out here, because I live right there, I see them have fun on this thing, they enjoy it. Give the kids a chance. ”

The playground is expected to be demolished soon, and if the playground is rebuilt, that may take anywhere between 6 months to a year.

” Not everyone should pay for those 2 kids mistakes, not everyone should pay the price, ” said Mr. G. ” Whoever is in charge of this, they’ll make a good decision. But, the first time I saw it, the first time it burned down they were crying. ”
