Victoria West High School varsity football game canceled due to COVID-19, district says
"Several players on the West Warrior team have tested positive for COVID-19"
VICTORIA, Texas- The Victoria Independent School District announced Wednesday afternoon that this week’s Victoria West High School varsity football game is canceled.
The game scheduled for Friday, September 25th against Boerne Champion is canceled after “several players on the West Warrior team have tested positive for COVID-19 and many have been quarantined due to close contact with a COVID-positive person,” the district said in a press release.
According to the district, the number of team members in quarantine has surpassed the 20% absentee rate the district implemented for determining whether to consider closing campuses and/or cancel events. This percentage does not allow the coaching staff to effectively and safely field a team for game time.
The freshman and junior varsity games this week will be played as scheduled, the district states.
Refunds are being offered to those who have purchased tickets for Friday’s West varsity football game. You can contact the VISD Athletics office at (361) 578-0289 for a refund.
“Our student-athletes and coaching staff have worked hard preparing for this season. While the cancellation is extremely disappointing for everyone, the virus is still active in our community and we must take appropriate steps to ensure their health and safety. Thank you for your continued support during these times of uncertainty, as we navigate these obstacles together,” the statement from the district concludes.”
Victoria West High School has reported five students thus far with confirmed positive COVID-19 cases. No staff at West have been reported to have the virus as of Wednesday afternoon.
