Victoria Teenager Wins State Title

Bauer Sets State Weightlifting Records

Here is Victoria’s newest state champion.
Brandon Bauer, a 19-year-old Victoria College student, last weekend won the 134.2 pound weight class at the Texas State Weighlifting Championship in Houston. Bauer crushed the state record for both snatch and clean and jerk in his weight class, and he also took the second overall junior male award for the whole tournament, getting a cash prize of $750. Bauer lifted over twice his weight over his head! He weighs 129 pounds. Brandon snatched 212 pounds and clean and jerked 264 pounds. Combined total, 476 pounds. I talked with Brandon Bauer Thursday afternoon.

“I can’t describe it. It feels so amazing. It’s a lot different than a national meet because the competition there is a little harder. State was fun but the competition was iffy, I guess. When I walk up to the platform and I see everybody. They’re spread out, eyes everywhere. But I’m zoned in. I get weightlifting slaps before I lift so I’m all hyped. Extremely focused and I don’t really notice anybody. I don’t notice anything.”

Brandon Bauer’s next weightlifting meet is Junior Nationals in Lombard, Illinois next month.
