VICTORIA, Texas – The Victoria Rotary Club made a recent donation to the City of Victoria Main Street Program and Victoria Fine Arts Association. The donation will help implement a new public art program that will put a spring in residents’ steps.

On Feb. 8, the club donated $1,000 to the Victoria Main Street Program and the Victoria Fine Arts Association. The donation will go towards the creation of a crosswalk art program downtown.

City officials identified decorative crosswalks as one of the ten low-cost “easy wins” in the City’s downtown master plan. This win would help to increase downtown development. The plan also urges the City to use resources efficiently by working with community partners to implement the plan. The Victoria Main Street Program has partnered with the Victoria Fine Arts Association and local artist Josh Vega of Free Art Victoria for the crosswalk art program.

The Victoria Main Street Program is also seeking additional sponsors for the program. If you are interested in sponsoring, you can contact Economic Development Director Danielle Williams via phone at 361-485-3060. You can also contact her via email at dwilliams@victoriatx.gov.

The organizations expect the project to reflect well on downtown. This year, the Victoria Main Street Program will apply to have downtown recognized as a cultural district through the Texas Commission on the Arts. This designation would give the Victoria Main Street Program access to more grant opportunities.

Originally, the Victoria Main Street Program planned to begin painting the crosswalks this year. The department has postponed the project, though, while it explores other streetscape projects that might require the crosswalks to be repaved. Painting is now expected to begin in March 2023.
