Victoria ISD temporarily closes DeLeon Elementary following spike in COVID-19 cases
Students will move to online learning for two weeks
VICTORIA, Texas- The Victoria Independent School District announced Tuesday that DeLeon Elementary School will temporarily transition to online learning following a spike in COVID-19 cases since the beginning of November.
Victoria ISD reports five staff members who have tested positive for COVID-19 and seven staff members who are currently required to quarantine.
As a precaution, DeLeon students and staff members will temporarily move to remote learning for two weeks (14 days) to mitigate the spread of the virus. VISD said this transition will begin Wednesday, November 4, and students and staff are expected to return to campus Wednesday, November 18.
The district said that devices and hotspots will be available for all students to have continued access to technology and the internet.
In a statement sent to Crossroads Today, the district said, “We understand this sudden transition will be inconvenient and your child will miss being in school; however, we greatly appreciate your families’ flexibility, patience, and support. We are optimistic that the following mitigation protocols will help increase students’ probability of having a safe and productive school year.”
As more COVID-19 cases are being confirmed across the state, VISD urges the community to monitor yourself and your family for symptoms of COVID-19. Any of the following symptoms indicate a possible COVID-19 infection:
• Temperature of 100.0 degrees Fahrenheit or higher when taken by mouth
• Sore throat
• New uncontrolled cough causing difficulty breathing (or, for students with a chronic allergic/asthmatic cough, a change in their cough from baseline)
• Diarrhea, vomiting, or abdominal pain
• New onset of severe headache, especially with a fever. Our students’ and staffs’ safety and health remain the district’s primary responsibility
All other schools in the district will continue to attend class on campus at this time.
Victoria ISD will have three sites for parents to utilize for drive-up meal pick up while students are learning remotely: Crain, Chandler, and O’Connor. Read more here: Victoria ISD to serve free breakfast and lunch to all district students through the remainder of the school year.
