Victoria ISD receives grant for Hurricane Harvey repairs

According to a statement from the Director of Communications, Shawna Currie Monda, Victoria Independent School District received a grant from the Rebuild Texas Fund to help with completing repairs to campus roofs that were severely damaged during Hurricane Harvey.

Currie confirmed that the “Rebuild Texas Fund award $657,000 to VISD for the needed roof repairs.”

Director of Federal Programs, Tammy Sestak applied for the grant on behalf of VISD.

“Mrs. Sestak has been overseeing VISD’s FEMA process since Hurricane Harvey hit in 2017. We applied for a grant through the Rebuild Texas Fund because we are committed to our community and seeing this area rebuild after Hurricane Harvey. We know that rebuilding after this storm will take many of us working together to solve big challenges and are excited to see change and improvements due to this grant and collaborative effort,” Currie said.

This grant is an important part of the rebuilding process in our community because it alleviates the financial burden to Victoria ISD for the necessary repairs that will mitigate future building damage and ensure students have a safe, healthy learning environment.

The Rebuild Texas Fund is committed to the recovery of areas in Texas hit by Hurricane Harvey, with a specific focus on smaller communities and six program areas of housing, education & childcare, health, small business, workplace & transportation and community & economic development.

When asked why the grant only applies to two schools in VISD, Currie responded by explaining that, “[r]oof damage at Vickers Elementary, the Crain Elementary Library building, and the Stroman Middle School gym has resulted in ongoing leaks and additional building damage. Despite ongoing negotiations with the district’s insurance provider, and current work with a legal team to litigate, VISD has not been able to secure the funds from insurance needed for the roof replacements.”

Currie concluded by saying that any remaining funds will be used towards Stroman Middle School.

Reparis are scheduled to begin this fall.
