Victoria ISD board hears transportation report, begins budget talks

VICTORIA, Texas –  A transportation company made a recommendation to widen the gap in release times between high school, middle and elementary campuses so school buses are able to operate more efficiently and on time.

The head of the school district’s transportation department said they would need 20 new buses to meet current needs.

Introductory budget talks also took place, during which trustees said they need to do better to pay mid-career educators at competitive rates to better retain them. The next two months are critical for budgetary talks for the school district, as facilities are also facing some much-needed upgrades. The percentage of funds in the district’s fund balance is also below where it needs to be.

There are several areas in need, now the district needs to figure out where to locate additional revenue. A local bond election may be unavoidable.

On Wednesday superintendent Quintin Shepherd says he will share more information on how the school district plans to approach the fall.

Also, if you haven’t registered your student for the 2020-2021 school year, doing so now will help with those budgetary talks this summer.
