Victoria ISD board hears salary study, discusses achievement gap

VICTORIA, Texas – Competitive teacher pay, anticipated cuts to state funding across the board, and a focused effort to improve test scores for all students in 3rd grade, made for a worthwhile discussion for Victoria ISD’s board members, weeks ahead of its 2020-2021 budget talks.

Board members heard from a statistician from a company contracted by the district to conduct a salary study as part of a community-sculpted master plan to better retain teachers.

Also hanging in the balance is the achievement gap with a needed-focus on 3rd-grade math and reading skills.

Some board members also took part in a committee meeting earlier in the day where superintendent Quintin Shepherd reflected on the 100,000+ meals they have provided to families since mid-March.

In closed session, board members voted to approve the appointment of Jo Beth Jones, current principal of Howell Middle School, to serve as the Executive Director of Talent Acquisition, Support and Retention.
