VICTORIA, Texas – The Victoria I.S.D. board heard from four members of the public Tuesday at its noon specially called meeting.

Former Deputy Superintendent Michael Kuhrt resigned Monday after starting July 5. He was hired June 30. The district saw immediate backlash following the hiring of Kuhrt. Many people cited his performance as superintendent when he worked in the Wichita Falls I.S.D.

Kuhrt released the following statement in his letter of resignation:

“I’d like to begin by thanking you and the Board of Trustees for giving me the opportunity to work in Victoria ISD. I was looking forward to working for you and helping you accomplish the mission of VISD. I wish you and the district nothing but the best in the years to come. However, based on the overwhelming negative and defamatory social media unrest, however false that it may be, I feel that it is in the best interest of the VISD that I resign my position effective July 11, 2022.”

The community also had the opportunity to air grievances with the district during Tuesday’s board meeting. Two of the four speakers demanded the board members who approved the hiring of Kuhrt resign immediately. Others expressed concern about poor leadership in Victoria I.S.D. campuses. Moving forward, Superintendent Quintin Shepherd said the district will continue to “listen to our community and give our community a voice.”

Supt. Shepherd earns $295,000 annually to serve the Victoria I.S.D. He joined the district in 2018.
