VICTORIA, Texas – The Victoria I.S.D. Education Foundation, like other non-profit organizations, had to adapt to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“In so many ways, 2020 for the V.I.S.D. Education Foundation was similar to what everyone has experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Quintin Shepherd, V.I.S.D. Superintendent.

With the change, came opportunity.

“One that I’m frankly most excited about is coming up at the end of this month, the Victoria ISD Education Foundation Telethon,” Shepherd said. “Now, this is something, we’ve never done before in a virtual environment. This is an opportunity for every single community member to see what the foundation does to hear about the great grant opportunity the foundation offers and to support the education foundation. It should be a fun evening.”

While the foundation primarily supports teachers through funding special projects and classroom initiatives, it also works to provide students with scholarships to help pay for dual credit courses, made possible through a partnership the district has with Victoria College.

“For students that may not otherwise take that opportunity, and here’s the best part about it and here’s the best thing about it, we know it works,” Shepherd said. “Every single year, year over year, we’ve had more students participate in dual credit classes, that number continues to climb at both East and West high schools and this is in addition to the fact that we offered OnRamps this year, which is a new dual enrollment opportunity through for kids through UT-Austin. At the same time, we still saw our numbers increasing. So more kids learning more, that’s the V.I.S.D. dream becoming a reality.”

Shepherd said he has been impressed with how the foundation has taken on the challenge of organizing a telethon instead of an in-person traditional fundraiser.

“I’m just in awe,” Shepherd said. “It’s a totally different skillset, it’s a totally different way of thinking about how we approach fundraising and it’s different and I’m in education, I love learning new stuff and so I’ve gotten to learn this new thing about, ‘What is a telethon?’ and ‘How do you put one together?’ and I think it’s fascinating, it’s just going to be an enjoyable evening, regardless of how it turns out, it’s just going to be fun.”

The Victoria I.S.D. Education Foundation telethon airs from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, January 31 on KAVU-TV.
