Victoria I.S.D. task force members discuss new proposals during partnership meeting

One of the proposals involve top priority repairs for schools in the district

VICTORIA, Texas – In an effort to build a stronger relationship between the school district and the community, V.I.S.D. have revamped their facilities upgrade plan, in hopes of satisfying both the needs of the community and the district.

During this morning’s Victoria Economic Development Partnership meeting, officials with the V.I.S.D. discussed new proposals for bond and/or VoterApproval Tax Rate Election (VATRE) that they want to make available to the voters this November.

The first option is approval for staff raises, at no cost to taxpayers.  (a bond cannot be used for staff salaries / a VATRE could increase M&O rate to pay for teacher salaries, programming, and other daytoday operations.i

The second proposal would be to do minimal top-priority repairs on the schools of the district.

The third proposal is a complete rebuild of Stroman Middle School and Mission Valley Elementary. This option would include a three-cent or higher tax increase.

Kathy Hunt, a member of the V.I.S.D. Community Task Force, says that the community’s input is vital, so they can decide how to best present this information to the voters in November.

“I just want people to be a part of the conversation. to help us and help the school district decide what we can do in the best educational setting for all of our students. we need everyone to be a part of the conversation, as we do move forward. something needs to be done to provide a great environment for our kids,” says Hunt.

Later this month, the task force will voice their recommendations to the school board before proposing a budget in August.

District officials have asked that each proposal be placed individually on the ballot. Also, no playgrounds will be included in this new proposal.

If you’d like to attend one of the community meetings, the first one is set for Wednesday, July 21st at 6 p.m. at the Stroman Middle School cafeteria.

The second one is set for Thursday, July 22nd at 6 p.m. at Shields Elementary also in the cafeteria.
