Victoria hosts day one of regional swim meet
The first day of the TAAF Region 16 Swim Championships got started on Saturday, hosted in Victoria at the VISD Aquatic Center. For day one of the regional meet, swimmers that are 10 years old and younger competed against hundreds of swimmers from across Texas for a trip to the state meet.
Victoria will be sending eight relay teams to state, with each group placing in the top three of their event. The two relay teams earning first place medals were the Girls 6 & Under 100-meter freestyle relay and the Boys 8 & Under 100-meter freestyle relay.
In the individual events, 16 Victoria swimmers qualified for state – some in multiple events. The big winners in the Girls 8 & Under group included Karli Stanush, who took home three gold medals in the 50-meter freestyle, 25-meter breaststroke and 25-meter freestyle. In the same group, Glory Palmer placed first in the 25-meter butterfly and the 100-meter IM and earned second place in the 50-meter freestyle.
For the Boys 9-10 group, Sammy Kurtz won big, taking first place in three events: the 25-meter breaststroke, the 25-meter freestyle and the 100-meter IM.
Other gold medal winners included Maliyah Lewis, Ava Collins and Annie Smith for the Victoria girls. For the boys, Bode Werner, Joey Smith and Jackson Quimby earned first place finishes.
The regional swim meet continues Sunday with swimmers that are 11 years old and older. The state swim meet will take place July 29-30 in Edinburg.
