Victoria County Democratic Party: “What specific content beyond the letters LGBTQ is so threatening to the public?”

Victoria Public Library will keep 21 LGBTQ related books available to the public

VICTORIA, Texas – The Chairman of the Victoria County Democratic Party released an open letter regarding a small group of people who requested 21 LGBTQ related books be removed from the Victoria Public Library. Wednesday night the advisory board agreed with its leadership to keep all 21 books in circulation.

By Woodrow Wilson Wagner:

The Victoria County Democratic Party. We are absolutely committed to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion for ALL of our citizens regardless their gender, age, race, or sexual orientation. As we have stated before, the strength and welfare of The United States of America is predicated on the freedom of expression codified by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution as well as the diffusion of knowledge. As President George Washington said, “Promote, then, as an object of primary importance, institutions for the general diffusion of knowledge. It is essential that public opinion should be enlightened.”

Therefore, we support the Victoria Public Library’s efforts to diffuse knowledge on a plethora of social issues including books that relate to racial and LGBTQ topics. It is important to note that the books in question are award winning titles that our part of the national library core collection. Moreover, these books may present an opportunity to enlighten the public discourse in this community, not only for LBGTQ citizens, but for ALL of us. Why would one want to stand in the way of such potential enlightenment? Reshelving, rating, and removing implies a “abnormality” or “inappropriateness” of content that makes the path to enlightenment difficult.

Indeed, we must also support any citizen’s right not to check out these books and express their objection to them. Yet, what is the foundation for a PUBLIC library prohibiting another citizen from checking out these books? What specific content beyond the letters LGBTQ is so threatening to the public?

We live in democratic republic. The Constitution of the United States is based on a social contract in which we enjoy various rights and privileges, yet also implies that we may not always get our own way. This is not a totalitarian state. This is the United States of America. This is Victoria Texas, a community that prides itself on tolerance and togetherness despite differences of opinion.

Let’s make President Washington proud and allow the PUBLIC library to promote the diffusion of knowledge! So say we all!
