Victoria County Commissioners discuss tax abatement application from Zinc Resources LLC
Other agenda items include a virtual mental health program and COVID-19 relief grants for the Victoria Regional Airport
VICTORIA, Texas – Victoria County Commissioners received a tax abatement application from Zinc Resources LLC and opened it for discussion during today’s meeting.
Commissioners also discussed having the Victoria Economic Development Corporation conduct an economic impact study Zinc Resources would have on the community.
Commissioners would then open the floor to allow residents to take the stand and voice their opinion on the tax abatement. Some residents see the tax abatement as a good thing to attract businesses to Victoria and a good source of economic development. Others see the environmental hazards that come with having Zinc Resources at the Port of Victoria and concerns of public health.
“So I understand that part of the rule is for county commissioners is to stand in part of the support of attracting businesses in the form of tax abatement but i also understand that it’s also the job of county commissioners to protect public health,” says Elizabeth Riebschlaeger, Victoria resident.
A public hearing on Zinc Resources will be on Monday, August 2nd.
Other agenda items included a virtual online mental health program, “Getting Better Together”. The program will be a joint effort with Gulf Bend Center, the Victoria Public Health Department and other local entities. The objective is to improve mental and physical health.
The Victoria Regional Airport will also receive COVID-19 relief grants related to the Texas Department of Transportation Airport Coronavirus Relief Grant Program.
