Victoria County accepts Texas A&M grant for Be Well Victoria program

The Victoria County Health Department have accepted a $20,000 donation from the Texas A&M Health Science Center to aid their Be Well Victoria program.

The Be Well Victoria program is a community analysis program aimed at discovering the top mental health barriers and issues facing the Victoria community. The $20,000 grant will be used to pay for a community health worker position to run community forums on the issue.

Public Health Director Derrick Neal says getting the community involved is key.

“Our strategy is a challenge in of itself because we have to reach those individuals who are resistant to dealing with systems and dealing with organizations, and, make them a part of the coalition and make them a part of the decision making group.”

Neal adds he hopes to hold another community forum in the future. A date for the forum has not yet been scheduled.
