Victoria College volleyball signs two players

First Players Signed For NJCAA Debut Team

Victoria College began assembling its inaugural National Junior College Athletic Association volleyball team with a pair of familiar faces on Tuesday.

Right-side hitter Gabby Weido and middle blocker Hope Trevino, who were freshmen on Victoria College’s Texas Collegiate Club Sports League team last year, signed letters of intent to play their sophomore seasons for the Pirates.

“Both of them were key players for us,” said Victoria College volleyball coach Josh Moore. “Moving forward into the NJCAA, we thought it was fitting to make them our first signees.”

Weido was an All-District 25-3A performer at Columbus in 2017, while Trevino was an All-District 32-6A selection at Los Fresnos.

“I couldn’t wait to be able to be one of the first ones to sign,” said Weido, who averaged 3.1 kills, 4.1 digs and 2.1 assists for the Pirates last season. “It’s always been a dream of mine to be able to play at the college level, and this team has made such a great impact on me. I can’t wait for next year to see where it takes us.”

“It’s definitely an honor to be one of the first two to sign with Victoria College,” said Trevino, who had 2.7 kills and 1.9 blocks per match for the Pirates. “I am excited for the new season and excited to play new teams with the same coaches. It’s an honor that the coach thinks so highly of us to have us sign first.”

Victoria College will make its NJCAA debut on Aug. 22 at home versus Wharton County Junior College.
