Victoria CC Hosts Pro-Am, Prepares for STPGA Championship
The Legends of Texas Pro-Am was held at Victoria Country Club on Sunday morning, pairing groups of two amateurs with a combination of either past champions, past Southern Texas PGA presidents, or former Joe Black Cup team members. The event was the first in a big week for VCC, which will host the 50th Southern Texas PGA Professional Championship the next three days.
One of the participants in Sunday’s Pro-Am was a golfer quite familiar with both the course and the STPGA, The Southern Texas PGA Professional Championship’s first ever champion, Butch Baird. Baird won that event back in 1968 when it was held at Victoria Country Club and says he’s just blessed to still be playing the game he loves.
“That’s a real honor because there are not many of us living fifty years later that can come back playing in the same event again,” Baird said after his round. “Texas is my home, was my home, so to come down here, win this is a real honor. And to come back again is a higher honor, and still walking.”
Baird’s group finished fourth in the best-ball Pro-Am.
The Professional Championship will tee off from Victoria Country Club at 7:30 am on Monday, with local golf pros Casey Russell and David Lundstrom both competing in the field. Play will continue through Wednesday.
