VCSO and VPD Teams Up to Discuss Mental Health

Victoria Police and Victoria County Sheriff’s may soon be working together to decriminalize mental health, they say as peace officers they are the first to respond when people may be dealing with mental health problems. Both Law Enforcement Agencies have teamed with the Gulf Bend Center to bring one officer from VPD and one deputy from VCSO with mental health certification to a task force that will handle situations involving people with mental illness. According to Victoria County Sheriff’s, Gulf Bend has agreed to pay a monthly bill for the two officers salaries and fringe expenses. They also say it’s the first step in helping people into the mental health care system and out of the criminal justice system.
