VC to offer nurse aide classes this fall

Victoria College’s Allied Health Continuing Education Department will offer nurse aide classes at two locations this fall.

“There is a shortage of qualified nurse aides,” said Allied Health Continuing Education Director Shari Gould. “These classes prepare students for entry-level nursing assistant positions by providing them the knowledge, skills and abilities essential to provide basic care to residents of long-term care facilities and other jobs requiring skills of a nurse aide.”

Fall nurse aide classes will be held from Aug. 31 to Nov. 16 at Victoria College’s Main Campus and from Aug. 28 to Nov. 1 at VC’s Gonzales Center. The fall classes at VC’s Main Campus will be held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 9 p.m. in Room 107 of the Allied Health Building. The fall classes at the Gonzales Center will be held Monday through Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. in Room 201.

“Victoria College has a strong reputation for graduating quality nurse aide candidates, and we’ve recently made some enhancements to better serve the needs of our students and the community,” said Gould.

Individuals who complete the course are eligible to take the Texas Nurse Aide Registry Examination, which is now administered in the same lab where students taking the class in Victoria learn and practice their nurse aide skills.

Students must also complete 50 clinical hours at local nursing facilities to receive their certificate of completion.

“The experience our students receive in the clinical setting is an important factor that contributes to their success,” said Gould, who explained that the state requires students to complete a minimum of 40 hours to gain certification.

The cost for the fall course is $635 and includes books. Scholarships are available to help cover a portion of tuition. Pre-registration is required, and the deadline for registering is one week before the class start date.

Nurse aides are utilized in home health, hospitals, nursing homes, schools, doctor’s offices, adult day cares, assisted living facilities and other facilities.
