VC PREP seeking students for seven-week summer STEM program
Applications are being accepted for Victoria College’s 2017 VC PREP to be held June 12-July 27 for sixth- and seventh-graders wishing to master high-level science, technology, engineering and mathematic (STEM) concepts.
VC PREP, which also allows students to interact with industry professionals and tour local laboratories, will be held Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. A Parent Orientation is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 25.
“VC PREP offers the opportunity for students to engage in hands-on activities and a challenging academic program that will motivate and prepare them for STEM careers,” said VC Pre-College Programs and Recruitment Coordinator Sabrina Romo.
The program is presented over the course of four summers and includes coursework, team projects, class presentations, examinations, career awareness speakers, field trips and special events. Elective credits may be earned upon successful completion to apply to a student’s high school credits.
Last year, 87 middle and high school students completed the seven-week program, which is also sponsored by Caterpillar, Victoria Independent School District, Calhoun County Independent School District and Alcoa.
Applications can be completed at VictoriaCollege.edu/VCPrep. Students must submit two reference forms – one from the student’s math teacher and the other from the student’s English or science teacher, or counselor. Applicants must also include their most recent report card and type a 100- to 200-word statement on why they want to attend VC PREP.
