V.I.S.D. to launch Victoria Virtual School for Covid-19 positive students

This short-term, night program will begin on Wednesday, Sept. 8

VICTORIA, Texas – Victoria I.S.D. is set to launch Victoria Virtual School (VVS) for Covid-19 positive students, beginning Wednesday, Sept. 8.

This short-term, night school option will serve grade levels pre-K through 12th-grade for students who have tested positive for Covid-19. It was also serve students who are quarantining due to a member of their household testing positive for Covid-19.

VVS is a short-term option for eligible students who meet specific criteria. Students are expected to return to on-campus learning following their quarantine period. Within 10 days, most eligible students will return to school. According to TEA guidance, each student is limited to 20 cumulative days of participation in programs similar to this for the academic school year.

VVS will be structured as follows:

  • One virtual classroom per grade level for students in elementary and middle schools;
  • High school students will be grouped by course;
  • Instruction will focus on core content areas of reading/language arts, math, science and social students;
  • Instruction will occur within the Schoology Learning Management System

Each day, elementary students will receive at least two hours of synchronous instruction combined with asynchronous instruction for a total of four hours. Students in pre-K through 4th-grade will receive synchronous instruction from 4 to 6 p.m. daily. Fifth-graders will receive an additional hour of synchronous instruction from 4 to 7 p.m. every day. Secondary students, 6-12, will participate in four hours of synchronous instruction from 4 to 8 p.m. every school day. Lessons will coordinate with the district’s curriculum, while also focusing on essential standards for the course or grade level. V.I.S.D. instructional staff members will teach the lessons.

Campus staff members will use designated criteria to identify eligible students. Then, they will notify the family to determine a start date. Technology will be available for Covid-19 positive students, following a Home Usage Form completion.
