Uresti Wins Southern Texas PGA Golf Title

It’s the second time around for Omar Uresti.

Uresti, PGA Life Member, claimed the 50 th Southern Texas PGA Championship presented by Club Car and OMEGA by two strokes over Ben Willman, PGA Teaching Professional at Axis Golf Academy & Fitting Center, and Ben Kern, PGA Head Golf Professional at Georgetown Country Club. Uresti recorded rounds of 68-69-68—205 (-8) to capture his second title in four years.

“This win feels good,” said Uresti. “My game has been struggling a little bit the last couple of weeks. To come and play some solid and consistent golf was nice. Those guys gave me a run today, so I’m grateful to come out on top.”

Uresti had a one-shot lead heading into Wednesday’s final round. Willman took the outright lead after the 7 th hole, but Uresti made three birdies on the back nine that gave him the lead once more, which he would hold onto for the rest of the round. For his victory, Uresti took home a check for $8,400.

“I had a couple of shaky swings on Holes #14 and #15,” said Uresti. “I wasn’t able to get up and down on Hole #14, but did on Hole #15. I made my putt after Kern made his nice birdie putt on Hole #16. To make mine after his was really nice.”

Uresti will lead eight other STPGA Professionals to the 2019 PGA Professional Championship, presented by Club Car and OMEGA. Joining him will be Wilman, Kern, Joe Mitchell, Chad Donegan, Jared Jones, Jamie Christianson, J.J Wood, and Casey Russell. The Championship will be contested April 28 – May 1, 2019, at Belfair in Bluffton, South Carolina. The top 20 players from the 2019 PGA Professional Championship will compete in the 101st PGA Championship at Bethpage State Park – Black Course in Farmingdale, New York, set for May 16-19, 2019.

Kern, PGA Head Golf Professional at Georgetown Country Club, is automatically exempt into the 2019 PGA Professional Championship with his top-20 finish at the 2018 PGA Professional Championship at Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Course in June. Uresti is also exempt into the 2019 event after winning the Championship in 2017.

This 54-hole event was the final of five individual stroke play championships that comprise the OMEGA Player of the Year Points List. It also served as a qualifier to earn points towards making the 2018 Texas Joe Black Cup Matches team and Levy Cup Matches team. Uresti will also have his choice of playing in either the 2019 Houston Open or Valero Texas Open.

The automatic qualifiers onto the 38 th Southern Texas PGA Texas Joe Black Cup Matches team will be announced on Thursday, August 30 at 10:00 a.m.

The Championship was held at Victoria Country Club, a 6,870-yard, par 72 layout, which played as a par 71 at 6,856-yards for this week’s Championship. This was the third time Victoria Country Club hosted the championship having hosted the inaugural championship as well as the 25th Southern Texas PGA Professional Championship. At the 25 th Anniversary, J. L. Lewis topped the leaderboard.
