Update: Goliad officially becomes purple heart county
GOLIAD, Texas — Update 2/5/19:
The Goliad County Commissioners have issued a proclamation offically desginating Goliad County as a purple heart county.
County commissioners made the announcement early Monday morning during their weekly meeting. The county will work with Purple Heart Cities United of Refugio to install signs along county roads honoring veterans who were wounded or killed in action during wars dating back to WWI.
Purple Heart Cities United say they are also willing to pay for and install additional signs and monuments at the request of Goliad commissioners.
Original Story 1/29/19:
Purple Hearts Cities United of Refugio has petitioned the Goliad County commissioners to declare a proclamation making Goliad a purple heart county.
The organization’s goal is to honor all wounded purple heart veterans and those who sacrificed their lives to their country.
The organization requested signs be placed along Goliad roads to show the county’s support for purple heart veterans, a request the county commissioners will consider on a future agenda.
“You know, basically, we have a couple of days that we celebrate a year. Veterans day. Memorial day. And, you know, that’s just two days out of the year. But, these signs will actually show that this county supports the wounded veterans everyday.”
If the proclamation is approved, Goliad county will be honored by the Military Order of the Purple Heart in Washington D.C. as the newest Purple Heart county.
