Many local departments tried recovering the body of an older man who fell into a nearby lake for three and a half hours.

VICTORIA, Texas – On Tuesday, July 13, 67-year-old Robert Guerra was attempting to remove a fishing net from a nearby tree, when he began drowning, said authorities.

Guerra began drowning inside Saxet Lake and only came up once, in an attempt to save himself.

County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Will Franklin said Sgt. Rigoberto Robles was near Patriot Park at the time of the incident.

“Sgt. Rigoberto Robles, who is one of our patrol sergeants was driving through Patriot Park on Fordyce road. Two fishermen flagged him down and told Sergeant Robles that they had witnessed an elderly Hispanic male fall into Saxet lake and be taken by the current,” Franklin said. “We will be here until dark, in an attempt to recover him. If we are unable, we will cease the effort tonight and reconvene in the morning.”

According to a family member, Guerra’s body was recovered around 6 p.m.

Many local departments responded, including the city Fire Department, Quail Creek Volunteer Fire Department, and Marshal’s Office.

Other agencies who tried to help were the Department of Public Safety dive team and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
