UHV’s Cano tied for fourth at Texas Women’s Open
GARLAND, Texas — University of Houston-Victoria golf coach Christi Cano shook of some early trouble Sunday and finds herself in a tie for fourth place after the opening round of the Texas Women’s Open at the Bridges of Firewheel.
With bogeys on holes four and five, Cano quickly found herself at two over par after just five holes. But the third year UHV head coach quickly shook off the setback and birded her next three holes en route to a 3-under par 69.
Cano is just three shots off the lead held by Megan Winans of Richardson, who posted a pair of 33s for a 6-under 66. Cano is tied with Tatiana Wijaya of Tustin, Calif.
Two players, Jessica Maynard of Petaluma, Calif., and Nicole Budnik of The Woodlands are tied for second at 4-under par 68
Making the turn at 1-under par 35, Cano tacked on seven pars and two birdies on the back-9 to finish with a 69.
Cut day for the 54-hole tournament is Monday with Cano scheduled to tee off on Hole No. 1 at 8:50 a.m.
Becky Benchot, a former UHV women’s player and an assistant pro at The Club at Colony Creek, posted an opening round 77 and is currently tied for 60th. She will tee off Tuesday at 7:40 a.m.
