UHV Women’s Soccer Plays In RRAC Tourney Quarterfinals
UHV women’s soccer will hit the road to start conference tournament action.
The Jaguar women clinched the number five seed in the tourney by defeating LSU-Alexandria Monday at the Cage, 2-0. The Jaguars have won their last three games and six of their last seven heading into the Red River tournament. I talked with two Jaguars about their Saturday rematch with LSU-A, this time at their place, this time in the conference tournament. Said attacking midfielder Jurnee Fernandez, “It’ll be more exciting for us. The fact that we’ll go and actually be in the tournament because we weren’t last year, gives us a lot of confidence on our backs.” Said center midfielder Nisa Ollivierre, “We’re going in knowing what they have and what we have. We’re coming in with a lot of confidence. We’re winning so we’re ready.”
Starting the year against two top-20 ranked teams may have been the formula the Jaguars needed this season to earn their fifth trip to the conference tournament in nine years.
The University of Houston-Victoria women’s soccer team will go on the road Saturday for another face-off against the LSU-Alexandria Generals in the quarterfinals of the 2018 Raising Cane’s Red River Athletic Conference Soccer Championships. Game time is schedule for 2 p.m.
The Jaguars (7-6) lost their first three games of the season, but since that point have bounced back to win seven of their last night games. The Jaguars will take a three-game win streak into their Saturday match, including a 2-0 win over LSUA this past Monday in the regular season finale.
It is the third time in four years for the Jaguars to make the RRAC Tournament after earning two appearances to the Association of Independent Institutions Conference Tournament. The Jaguars are 1-4 in tournament play with their lone win coming in the 2016 RRAC Tournament with a 2-0 victory over Huston-Tillotson.
LSUA holds a 3-2 edge of the Jaguars in their season series since 2015 and eliminated them in the 2016 RRAC Tournament 1-0. Monday’s win snapped LSUA’s three-game win streak over the Jaguars.
Elizabeth Reyes (FR/Edinburg, TX) leads UHV’s attack with 20 points behind nine goals and two assists. Lauren Leslie (SR/Falkirk, Scotland) has chipped in five goals and six assists for 16 points, while Isabella Strasheim (FR/Corpus Christi, TX) has added five goals and one assist for 11 points.
Kayleigh Lambrechts leads the Generals with four goals and seven assists, while McKay Leos has four goals and three assists and Lacey Polderman has four goals and two assists. LSUA has edged their opponents in scoring 26-23.
Cecilie Mortensen has been the key player in goal for the Generals where she has allowed 23 goals and recorded 99 saves.
The winner of Saturday’s quarterfinal match advances to the conference semifinals which start on Thursday, Nov. 8, at Texas A&M-Texarkana.
