UHV students chase blues away with Holiday Bash

University of Houston-Victoria students took a break from studying for finals to take in some holiday cheer. And at Jaguar Hall, while some students are looking forward to going home for the holidays, others are ready to get into the holiday spirit even though class is still in session.

“So right now, we’re actually hosting our Holiday Bash here in Jaguar Hall Commons, which we have activities going on, like all over the place, for example we have build your own snow man, which you’ll take a regular sock and fill it with rice, and then you decorate your own snowman,” said Madeline Colunga, a UHV senior and president of the Jaguar Activities Board. “We have actually ornament decorating as well, as you can see the lovely tree behind me, we actually hosted a Christmas tree lighting last night, so students have the opportunity to make their own ornament and add to our tree here in Jaguar Hall.”

Cesar Gonzalez, a UHV student from Rosenberg majoring in business – says he chose UHV because it’s not too far from but not too close to home. Gonzalez says he thinks the Holiday Bash is a great way to engage students during a stressful time.

“As a student it’s great because I know when it comes to academics a lot of students get stressed, a lot of students feel the homesickness, so just to be able to provide them a little bit of home and fun on campus, is always great,” Gonzalez said.

And being able to organize events like these – are important for student leaders like Colunga.

“So, a big thing of mine, the reason why we host events is that so students come out of their room,” Colunga said. “A lot of students here in Victoria are very homebodied, and don’t want to do anything, so we have the opportunity to bring events here to campus instead of trying to find something to do.”

And for some students, the Holiday Bash was not only an opportunity to ring in the season, it was also a chance to shine.
