UHV Softball Eliminated From Nationals

A painful ending to UHV softball’s season Tuesday. Play after play and out after out came down to just one play Tuesday afternoon for the University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars softball team.

The Jaguars were eliminated from the Gulf Shores Bracket of the NAIA Softball Opening Round Tournament in a 6-5 11-inning loss to the Brenau Golden Tigers on a wild pitch.

The Jaguars finish the year at 30-18, while Brenau improves to 29-21 and advanced to play Thomas University in a Tuesday evening elimination game.

Despite some controversy in the 11th inning, the Golden Tigers found a way to earn the victory.

Faith Grooms, who was 4-for-6, opened the 11th with a single to left-center. After moving to second on a sacrifice bunt, Autumn Conaway singled and Kelsey Payne walked to load the bases.

Unfortunately for the Jaguars, Jackie Longoria (FR/Edinburg, TX)’s first pitch to Savannah Moore skipped past catcher Marissa Longoria (SO/Houston, TX) allowing Grooms to score the winning run.

The controversy in the 11th began when Alyssa Adames (JR/Victoria, TX) opened the inning on a walk. Marissa Longoria then put down a sacrifice bunt, but Adames dove back into first before trotting down to an open second base.

After meeting the umpires ruled Longoria out and Adames was safe at second.

Alexis Carabajal (FR/Port Lavaca, TX) then singled Adames to third. Alyssa Dial (SR/Victoria, TX) then put down a squeeze bunt and Adames was called out on a close play at home.

UHV grabbed the first lead with a two-run fourth that included a sacrifice fly by Angelica Davidson (SO/Portland, TX) and an RBI double by Torey Dumont (JR/Pleasanton, TX).

The Golden Tigers cut the lead in half in the bottom part of the fourth and then took the lead with as two-run home run by Grooms in the fifth.

The Jaguars struck right back in the sixth as Ashley Reyna (FR/Harlingen, TX) reached on catcher’s interference. Lisa Sosa (FR/Corpus Christi, TX) then beat out a bunt for a base hit and Emily Flores (SO/Houston, TX), who was 4-for-4, delivered a two-run triple for a 4-3 UHV lead.

Davidson would then single Flores home for a 5-3 advantage that stood up until the bottom of the seventh.

The Golden Tigers sent eight batters to the plate and scored twice to tie the game to force extra innings.

Kaleigh Sullivan went the distance in the circle to earn the win for the Golden Tigers, while Jackie Longoria was tagged with the loss despite allowing one run over four innings of relief work.

Cheyenne Galindo (FR/Ganado, TX) started for the Jaguars and worked five innings allowing three runs, while Kelsey Tidrick (SO/Port Lavaca, TX) allowed two runs in 1.1 innings of relief.
