UHV softall splits series with Xavier

Jaguars lose game one: 8-0; win game two: 10-3

NEW ORLEANS, LA- The UHV Jaguars softball team took on Xavier on the road in a doubleheader on Friday afternoon.

The Jaguars get shut out 8-0 in game one. Cameron Steen started in the circle for UHV and went three innings. Secilia Lopez took over in the fourth and pitched the final inning. Ashley Reyna hit a double but the Jaguars weren’t able to get any runs or hits going. The team totaled just two hits in the game. Xavier pitcher Carina Chargois pitched all five innings allowing just the two hits and no runs.

In game two, Xavier scored in the first inning, but the Jaguars score a run in the second and add a run in the fourth before opening the game with a three-run fifth inning taking a 6-1 lead over Xavier. In the sixth, UHV adds one more run. The defense holds Xavier after the first inning not allowing anymore runs until th e bottom half of the sixth, when Xavier brings in a run to cut their deficit and trail 7-2. UHV right away added three more runs in the top half of the seventh and held Xavier to one run in the bottom half of the inning to get the 10-3 win and split the series.                                                                                                    Madison Leighton and Claire Blinka had two RBI’s including a homerun by Blinka in the seventh inning. Alexi Wade started in the circle for UHV pitching six innings allowing 4 hits and just two runs. Kayla Dow closed the game allowing three hits and one run.
