UHV Soccer’s Big Home Thursday Showdowns

Jaguar Men Tie, Women Lose

UHV soccer comes away from its big Thursday home conference showdowns without a win.

The LSU-Shreveport Pilots used a second half goal to hand the University of Houston-Victoria women’s soccer team their first Red River Athletic Conference loss on Thursday.

Gabriela de Jesus’ corner kick curled off the crossbar and into the net in the 54th minute leading the Pilots to a 1-0 win over the Jaguars.

It was the Jaguars’ first conference loss as they fell to 9-5-1 overall and 5-1-1 in conference play. LSUS improves to 6-7 overall and 5-1 in conference.

It was a battle between two of the top teams in the conference as the Pilots held a 12-9 edge in shots over the Jaguars, including a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal.

Elizabeth Reyes (SO/Edinburg, TX) and Daisy Contreras (JR/Stockton, CA) each had two shots to lead the Jaguars, while Hayden Janner (SO/Cypress, TX), Victoria Smith (SO/Round Rock, TX), Elizabeth McDonald (SO/New Braunfels, TX), Ariana Balderas (FR/San Antonio, TX) and Victoria Trevino (FR/Pharr, TX) each had one.

UHV goalkeeper Amanda Bautista (SR/Houston, TX) finished with eight saves.

The Jaguars return to action Saturday when they host LSU-Alexandria in a 1 p.m. conference match at the Cage.

In a hard-fought battle between the top two teams in the Red River Athletic Conference, the University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars battled the No. 16 LSU-Shreveport Pilots to a 1-1 draw Thursday at the Cage.

The Jaguars, who received votes in the latest NAIA poll on Wednesday, stayed unbeaten as they moved to 13-0-2 on the year and 5-0-2 in conference. The Pilots are now 9-3-3 overall and 5-0-1 in conference.

The two teams got off just 19 shots in the double-overtime match, but it was two in the second half that proved beneficial.

The Jaguars drew first blood as Olive Nugent took a pass from Jean Bosco Irumva (SO/Dallas, TX) and curled it into the back of the net past the LSUS goalkeeper in the 67th minute.

The Pilots would tie the contest in the 81st minute as Marten Weinitschke found the back of the net off a pass from Chris Eduardo.

The Jaguars outshot the Pilot 12-7 and held a narrow 6-5 edge in shots on goal.

Brody Patience (SR/Douglas, Isle of Man) paced the Jaguars with four shots, while Nugent had three. Irumva, Sydney Tume (JR/Houston, TX), Mohammed Ibrahim (SR/Ridgeland, MS), Alberto Martinez (FR/Mission, TX) and Diego Alvarez (SR/Katy, TX) each had one shot for the Jaguars.

UHV goalkeeper Gian Marco Cordoba (JR/Houston, TX) finished with four saves.
