UHV soccer sweeps St. Thomas

Ariana Balderas (FR/San Antonio, TX) and Elizabeth Reyes (SO/Edinburg, TX) each scored goals Sunday evening to help lift the University of Houston-Victoria women’s soccer team to a 2-0 win over the Houston St. Thomas Celts.

The Jaguars improve to 2-2 with the win, while the Celts fall to 0-3-1. The Jaguars return home Friday to host Sul Ross in a 1 p.m. match at The Cage.

The Jaguars scored single goals in each half with Balderas getting the game-winner in just the fifth minute of play. Kimberly Liker (FR/Killeen, TX) hit Daisy Contreras (JR/Stockton, CA) with a pass and Contreras found Balderas, who used a spin move to get pass a Celts defender and score the goal from the top of the box.

Reyes would add an insurance goal off an assist from Nisa Ollivierre (JR/Baytown, TX) in the 51st minute for a 2-0 advantage.

The Jaguars outshot the Celts 16-6 and held a 7-3 edge in shots on goal. Reyes finished with four shots, while Balderas added three, with Victoria Smith (SO/Round Rock, TX) and Katerin Morales (FR/Houston, TX) two each.

Amanda Bautista (SR/Houston, TX) was in goal for the Jaguars for her second clean sheet of the week as she had three saves.

The UHV men, meanwhile, overcame a physical battle Sunday night to capture a 1-0 win over the NCAA Division 3 Houston St. Thomas Celts.

In a game that saw a combined 39 fouls, the Jaguars used an early second-half goal from Mohammed Ibrahim (SR/Ridgeland, MS) to capture the victory.

Celts goalkeeper Pedro Medrano managed to block Ibrahim’s header, but Ibrahim was able to tap the rebound into the right corner of the goal for the game winner in the 52nd minute.

UHV improves to 4-0 on the season, while St. Thomas falls to 1-2. The Jaguars will be back in action Friday when they host Sul Ross in a 3:30 p.m. match at The Cage.

UHV controlled the offensive output with a 7-4 edge in shots, including a 6-0 advantage in shots on goal. Ibrahim and Adrian Rodriguez (JR/McAllen, TX) each had two shots, while Brandon Watts (JR/Sunbury-On-Thames), Connagh Wilks (JR/Egham, England), and Oliver Nugent (JR/Liverpool, England) each contributed one.

Gian Marco Cordoba (JR/Houston, TX) was in goal for the Jaguars for the shutout.
