UHV Soccer Sweeps A&M-Texarkana

Both Jaguar Teams 2-0 In Conference

UHV soccer wraps up a big home week with a Red River conference sweep Saturday.

The University of Houston-Victoria men’s soccer team had to work a little extra time Saturday to keep their record unblemished.

Oliver Nugent (JR/Liverpool, England) scored a Golden Goal in the 96th minute lifting the Jaguars to a 2-1 overtime win over Texas A&M-Texarkana in a Red River Athletic Conference match at the Cage.

The Jaguars improve to 10-0 on the season and 2-0 in conference, while the Eagles fall to 3-6-1 overall and 0-2 in conference.

The Jaguars held a 1-0 lead until the 70th minute when the Eagle broke through on a header from Ronald Makaarmba to tie the game.

Connagh Wilks (JR/Egham, England)’ header off a cross from Brody Patience (SR/Douglas, Isle of Man) put the Jaguars up 1-0 in the eighth minute.

The Jaguars got off the only two shots in overtime, with Nugent taking a pass from Adrian Mendoza (SR/Houston, TX) and firing it past the outstretched Eagles goalkeeper.

UHV outshot the Eagles 22-6 and held a 6-2 edge in shots on goal. Most of the shots came in the first half where the Jaguars outshot the Eagles 12-1.

Wilks paced the Jaguars with five shots, while Patience put up four and Nugent three. Jean Bosco Irumva (SO/Dallas, TX) and Mendoza each added two shots to the Jaguars’ attack.

UHV will return to action Thursday on the road when they face Texas College in a RRAC match at 3:30 p.m. in Tyler.

Ariana Balderas (FR/San Antonio, TX) scored the lone goal Saturday to help lift the University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars to a 1-0 Red River Athletic Conference victory over the Texas A&M-Texarkana Eagles at The Cage.

Balderas coming off a corner kick, had the ball punched back at her where she fired off a shot that curved past the Eagles goalkeeper for the lone goal in the 41st minute.

The win keeps the Jaguars unbeaten in conference play at 2-0, while they improve to 6-4 on the season. The Eagles fall to 5-4-1 overall and 0-2 in conference.

It was a defensive battle most of the way with the Eagles out shooting the Jaguars 12-9 and holding a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. But, Balderas was able to make one of the shot count and that was all the Jaguars needed.

Balderas and Elizabeth Reyes (SO/Edinburg, TX) paced the Jaguars with three shots each, while Consuelo Luna (JR/Sanger, CA), Daisy Contreras (JR/Stockton, CA) and Victoria Trevino (FR/Pharr, TX) each had one shot.

Amanda Bautista (SR/Houston, TX) was in goal for the clean sheet for the Jaguars as she recorded her fifth shutout and improved to 5-2. She finished with six saves.

The Jaguars return to action Thursday with a 1 p.m. conference match at Texas College.
