UHV soccer gets Sunday sweep over Concordia
VICTORIA, Texas — Victoria Trevino (FR/Pharr, TX) made her first collegiate goal count in a big way Sunday with a Golden Goal to lift the University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars women’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory over the Concordia-Texas Tornadoes.
Trevino came off the bench Sunday and scored the game’s lone goal on a rebound shot off a miss by Elizabeth Reyes (SO/Edinburg, TX) in the 97th minute.
The Jaguars improve to 3-3 on the season, while the Tornadoes fall to 0-4.
The two teams ended the 90-minute regulation tied at 0-0 in the tightly contested match. The Jaguars found the opening they were looking for when Reyes shot from in close bounced off the CUA goalkeeper and Trevino tapped it home to the game winner.
The Jaguars outshot the Tornadoes 21-16 and held a 13-8 edge in shots on goal. Victoria Smith (SO/Round Rock, TX), Kimberly Liker (FR/Killeen, TX), Hayden Jenner and Daisy Contreras (JR/Stockton, CA) paced the Jaguars with three shots each, while Trevino added two.
Amanda Bautista (SR/Houston, TX) was in goal for the shutout and finished with eight saves on the day
The men’s soccer team, meanwhile, continued to roar Sunday afternoon at the Cage.
The Jaguars scored a pair of goals in each half Sunday to extend their season-opening win streak to six games with a 4-0 win over the Concordia Tornadoes. The Jaguars are off to their best start in program history and improve to 6-0, while the Tornadoes fall to 2-3-1.
Team-leading scorer Br(SR/Douglas, Isle of Man) took a pass from Adrian Mendoza (SR/Houston, TX) in the eighth minute and buried his shot in the back of the net to give the Jaguars the only goal they would need.
The team wasn’t through scoring though, as Adrian Rodriguez (JR/McAllen, TX) curved a free kick past the CUA goal following a foul on Brody just outside the top of the penalty box. The goal put the Jaguars up 2-0 in the first half.
Daniel Gribben (JR/Glasgow, Scotland) and Jean Bosco Irumva (SO/Dallas, TX) would tallied their first goals of the season in the second half to extend the Jaguars lead. Gribben’s goal came in the 48th minute off an assist from Patience, while Irumva struck just over a minute later off an assist from Diego Alvarez (SR/Katy, TX).
The Jaguars dominated the offense out shooting the Tornadoes 20-4, including an 11-1 edge in shots on goal.
Patience and Alvarez led the Jaguars with four shots each, while Rodriguez added two.
Gian Marco Cordoba (JR/Houston, TX) and Austin Branham (SO/Austin, TX) were in goal for the shutout with Cordoba picking up the lone save in the contest.
The Jaguars return to action Thursday when they travel to Texas Wesleyan for a 7 p.m. match.
