UHV Signs Athletes In Three Sports
Jaguars Add Softball, Women's Soccer, Men's Golf Athletes
Busy signing period for UHV athletics.
University of Houston-Victoria softball coach Lindsey Ortiz today announced the signing of Victoria West graduate Kylee Rojas to play softball for the Jaguars.
Rojas is a 2020 graduate of Victoria West High School and played first base for the Lady Warriors. She was the team’s defensive MVP this past season and was the team’s offensive MVP as a sophomore.
She compiled a .442 batting average with 20 RBI this past season with a .999 fielding percentage.
“I knew from the day I started thinking about playing college softball, I wanted to stay in Victoria,” said Rojas. “I kept up with the program at UHV and loved it, I knew it was a perfect fit for me.”
Rojas plans to major in psychology with a minor in business while attending UHV.
University of Houston-Victoria men’s golf coach Garrett Adair today announced the signing of Dawson Frye to the men’s golf team beginning with the 2020-21 season.
Frye transfers in to UHV after a year at Oklahoma Panhandle State University. He played in five events this past season for the Aggies with two top-10 finishes. He fired a low round of 74 and tied for second at the 2019 Clash of the Conferences event.
Frye is a 2019 graduate of Amarillo High School and was recognized as the team’s MVP.
“The opportunity to play for a good golf program is what brought me to UHV,” said Frye.
Frye plans to study business while at UHV and hopes to one day become a golf professional.
University of Houston-Victoria men’s soccer coach Adrian Rigby today announced the signing of three solid freshmen to the women’s soccer team beginning with the 2020 season.
The signees include Estelle Flanagan , a forward from McKinney; Alexis Honts, a midfielder from Copperas Cove; and Maricris Albarda, a midfielder from Corpus Christi.
Flanagan, a 2020 graduate of McKinney High School, is a four-time all-district selection. She earned first team recognition as a sophomore and senior and second team honors as a freshman and junior. She was also academic all-district all four years.
“Estelle is a strong addition to our attacking core,” said Rigby. “She is very dangerous 1v1 and has the ability to finish her chances. She has great timing and creativity in the runs she makes off the ball. We’re excited for Estelle to be scoring goals at UHV next season.”
She also exceed in the classroom where she had a 3.86 GPA and ranked 188 out of 724 in her class.
“I chose UHV because I felt welcomed from the start,” said Flanagan.
Flanagan plans to study business management while attending UHV.
Honts is a 2020 graduate of Copperas Cove High School where she earned honors as all-district honorable mention, all-district second team and all-district first team. She was received the coaches award in 2018 and 2019.
“Alexis is another versatile player joining us in 2020,” said Rigby. “Her technical ability and quick thinking will allow us to put her in different positions all over the field. We’re looking forward to have Alexis’ quickness and aggression on the field next season.”
She was just as successful in the classroom and as on the field as she was named academic all-state in 2017, 2018 and 2019.
“I knew UHV would be my home for the next four years because of the small class sizes and close campus community made me feel welcome right away,” said Honts. “I loved that everyone I met was warm, inviting, and helpful. After meeting the coaches and practicing with the players, I was even more confident in my choice; every minute of my visit showed me what UHV has to offer.”
Honts plans to study kinesiology with a minor in nutrition while attending UHV.
Albarda is a 2020 graduate of Veterans Memorial High School where she was a three-time all-district selection and also earned all-region recognition as a junior. She named second team as a freshman and sophomore and first team as a junior.
During her first three seasons she tallied 44 goals and 22 assists, and finished her senior season with seven goals and 13 assists. She took part in the Olympic Development Program and was selected to the South Texas State Team in 2018 and was recognized as one of the top four female soccer players to represent South Texas. She was also award the Lady Eagle Pride Award in 2018-19.
“Maricris is a talented midfielder that is able to determine the outcome of the game on her own at times,” said Rigby. She has a knack for dribbling past players and disorganizing defenses. She has the confidence and work rate to come in and make and immediate impact.”
She also exceeded in the classroom where she was academic all-district three times and academic all-state second team this past year .She was a member of the National Honor Society and was to graduate with Distinguished Honors. She was also a member of the Beta Club and the Student Council.
“The luring environment of the small campus, the dedicated soccer team and coaches, and the school pride gave me the immediate feeling that this would be my home for the next four years,” said Albarda.
She plans to study kinesiology pre-allied health working toward a physical therapy degree.
The Jaguars have now signed 11 players for the 2020 season.
